Navajo Tacos for Dinner

After our tour of Monument Valley, we went back to the campground and got cleaned up. Since rain was still threatening, we didn’t cook outside like we did the night before.

Goulding’s campground has a charcoal grill at each site that stands about waist high, which is nice. The night before, we grilled pork spare ribs and potatoes in foil packets. There are no mosquitoes here, but there are lots of flies. They kept up company while we ate.

But since a fire wasn’t possible tonight, we went to the dining room at Goulding’s Lodge for dinner. All the people who work there are Navajo. I suggested that we try the Navajo Taco appetizer since I was the only one until then who had tried an Indian taco back in Montana near Little Big Horn. I knew Jeff would love them. Indian tacos are made with Indian fry bread, which is a circle of fried dough, instead of tortillas. On top of the fried dough, they put chili with beans, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. They are delicious.

The appetizer plate arrived with four small tacos – one for each of us. These were outstanding, and everyone liked them The kids don’t like beans, so they picked theirs out.

The rest of our dinners were very good as well, and we left the restaurant full and happy. We walked outside to get a view of Monument Valley now that the clouds were clearing, and checked out the Goulding’s Museum. Then we took a short drive around the area to see what else we could see . The cows Ruth and I saw at sunrise were still out grazing by the side of the road so Henry got to see them too. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy for a nice sunset like the night before.
