I Can See the Writing on the Wall

Before heading back to the campground after our jaunts to Canyonlands and Arches yesterday, we took a little detour down a road along the Colorado River we passed on our jet boat tour. It was a bit intimidating to drive alongside of massive red boulders that seemingly go up to the sky – what the locals call Wall Street. And directly on the other side of the road is the Colorado River.

After a few miles, we came to the wall with the rock art we saw from the boat. It was so much better to see it up close. They can date the carvings based on what the images are. If the image of a person is carrying a spear, they know it’s from around 500 AD. If the human figure is riding a horse, it would be much later, around 1500 AD, after the Spanish reintroduced horses to the area.

There are a few rock art sites near Moab, but this is the only one we got to see on this visit. It’s well worth seeing in person if you can, it’s an amazing piece of history.
