A Trek Across Iowa

This morning, we woke up in the hotel, grabbed breakfast, and then packed up and went back to the RV.  We slept in a bit, and got on the road in the RV around 9:00 a.m.

As we were approaching Des Moines, Jeff requested a stop at Maid-Rite, a local restaurant chain that sells loose meat sandwiches.  You might not have heard of them before; the only way I had heard of them was on the TV show Roseanne.  It's basically loose hamburger meat that is cooked and scooped onto a hamburger bun.   A better description would be a sloppy joe without any sauce.

We ate at Maid-Rite two years ago when we were in Des Moines, and I thought the sandwiches were okay, but not worth a repeat visit.  Jeff thought otherwise.  Actually, he couldn't remember if he liked them or not.

I searched the Maid-Rite website on my iPhone and found one a few miles off of I-80, so that's where we went.  Jeff was able to run the Jeep to keep the battery charged while we ran in to get lunch.

It was about time for a Ruth meltdown, and she did not disappoint.  She didn't remember coming here two years ago and didn't understand what a loose meat sandwich was.  She didn't know what to order, so I just ordered her a kids' loose meat sandwich.  Henry opted for the pulled pork sandwich - a wise choice.

Ruth eventually tried her loose meat sandwich but didn't like it.  She did, however, like the fries.

Our stomachs full, we got back on the road.

We attempted another stop farther west on I-80, when we saw signs for the Amana Colonies National Historic Site.  We drove off the highway to get there, but let's just say it didn't work out.  We eventually got back on I-80 and continued west.

We originally planned to drive to Peoria today, but changed our minds to stop in the Quad Cities, along the Mississippi River.  Davenport, Iowa sits on the western side of the Mississippi River and the cities of Moline and Grand Island are on the eastern side.  There's also the cities of Mettendorf, Iowa and East Moline, Illinois that are considered part of the Quad Cities, and while the notion of the "Quint Cities" was discussed, apparently it didn't stick.  So it seems there's five cities in the Quad Cities area.  Go figure.

We found a KOA on the Illinois side that sits on a small lake.  It would be a nice campground to spend time outdoors at if it wasn't so hot.  It's still in the 90's but with the humidity, it just isn't fun to be outside.

The kids still wanted to go to the pool, so Jeff took them.  I stayed in the RV where it was nice and cool, and enjoyed the quiet.
