A Sunday Drive

We had to bite our upper lip today and do what we try to avoid at all costs, which is an entire day of driving.  But it had to be done.  We left Hill City, South Dakota at 7am MST and made our way to Rapid City, South Dakota where we hooked up with I-90 east.  I-90 took us 375 miles across SD and we made a pit stop in Wall, SD (so Lynn could get freshly made doughnuts and Henry could get his long-wanted jackalope) and then again at Al's Oasis near Chamberlain, SD where we crossed the Missouri River. The Lewis and Clark Trail winds along the Missouri River.

Once we reached Sioux Falls, SD we headed south on I-29, which took us through Sioux City, Iowa and on to Council Bluffs, Iowa.  There were a few areas with heavy flooding along the Missouri River, and we saw lots of sand bags along the highway and overpasses. We planned to join up to I-80 and head over to Omaha, Nebraska to camp for two nights.  Little did we know that flooding (we think) closed I-29 around Council Bluff so we had to go 32 miles out of our way in order to make it back to Omaha.  Pretty tough pill to swallow after driving 550 miles and thinking you are just about there.  Anyway, we put in 610 miles today which took 11 hours and 15 minutes and at a fuel cost of roughly $320.  We will make up for this tomorrow by doing everything there is to do in Omaha, Nebraska and not driving all over God's creation to do it.  By the way, it's HOT in Nebraska.

Happy Trails.

Jeff
