We traveled Missouri Route 24 to 36 to get to Kansas City from Hannibal. Who knew so many famous people were from that area of the state. In addition to Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain and Molly Brown, we came upon Marceline, Walt Disney's hometown. I found that courtesy of my Roadside America iPhone app, which notes all the wacky, weird and interesting sites in the U.S. Unfortunately, while we were in the vicinity of the World's Biggest Pecan (12 feet long and made of cement), it was on a different highway so we couldn't stop to see it.

The museum commemorating Walt's time in Marceline is in the town's old train station. We learned at Disney World that Walt loved trains, and once you see his town, it's clear why. It was definitely a railroad town, with a beautiful train station. Walt could watch trains come and go all day.
We didn't go in the museum, and we skipped checking out a tree that Walt used to lay under and think about cartoons because it might have been sticky with the RV and Jeep in tow. But it was nice to see where Walt grew up.
A bit farther down the road in Laclede, we saw signs for the birthplace of General Pershing. In Hamilton, you can visit the JC Penney Museum, honoring James Cash Penney, who started the first store and then the chain. And then in Kearney, a short distance from Kansas City, there's the hometown of Jesse James.
